There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Where are you? In Bangkok?
There have been some courses in the past but I'm not aware of any going on now.
I did see some reference to a person starting a school in Bangkok but really can't recall where that was now. Sorry.

I think options do come up from time to time. If I hear of anything I'll let you know. I'm sure others here will comment as well, given some time. There is photography classes at some of the schools here, like at Silapakorn, but they would be taught in Thai of course and I think are part of a full diploma / degree program of some sort. In the meantime, while waiting for something to turn up, I would spend time online as there is a huge amount of information available. It won't be as good as hands on instruction but it can help. And also keep in mind that the very best way to make progress is to shoot a lot. Shoot photos all the time and look at your results and you'll be surprised at how you can improve. It never hurts.

I agree with Chris’s advice. You can start by just getting out and taking photos. I began 40 years ago and everything I know; which isn’t much, is self-taught. Before the Internet I read books on techniques and still do. I think that if one has a specific interest such as Marc's recent Studio Lighting Seminar then that is a great way to get hands on experience from a proven professional.

With the tools available today with imaging programs it is amazing what you can learn. Yesterday I picked up two training programs by Deke McClelland for Photoshop.
Sorry I do not know of any schools here that teach photography outside of the university's that offer it.
Good luck in your pursuit of photography and as Marc recently said it is a continual journey of learning. So true!

Leah-

There is an excellent book that is probably out of print now; 'The Camera' from Time Life. It was part of a series they offered in the late 1960's. I have seen them from time to time in used book stores. The book explains in very clear terms the basics of how a camera and various lenses work in different combinations of aperature and shutter speed. It shows what a effects different lenses have on the same subject.

As for the Photoshop programs I first purchased 'Total Training for Photoshop CS2' by Deke McClelland. That would not open on my MacBook Pro so they exchanged it for a second copy that would not open either. A few days ago I was offered another program so I chose 'Photoshop CS2 Mastering Camera Raw' and 'Photoshop CS3 One-on-One Advanced Techniques' both by Deke McClelland. I purchased these at Fortune from a shop on the 4th floor. I have not tried either one yet.

There are a lot of good photographers on this forum and if you look at the gallery and read the comments it is a good way to pickup a few ideas on technique. I think the BHPHOTO.com website also has some instructional material available; http://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/Product_Resources/navigationComu.jsp

Still with all of this it does not answer your question about a local photography school so please let us know what you find in that regard.

I looked at Jonathan Taylor’s website. It sounds as though you get one-on-one training and a direct to the point Photoshop crash course with a critique of the days images.

If it is indeed what is offered then the price seems fair to me, especially if you learn something. I am not a professional photographer; for me it is a hobby and nothing more. But over the years I have invested heavily in education as it pertained to my profession and I have never regretted it.

Let us know what you think after you take the course.

Hi Leah

In the meantime there are two excellent UK Magazines which you can get in Thailand that are very helpful for photographers of all levels.

One is Practical Photography and the other is Digital Photo.  As I am in Chiang Mai I am not sure where you can get them in Bangkok but suggest any of the bigger English Magazine places would have them.

The Digital Photo Mag comes with an excellent CD every month which has a lot of great tips on photography and Photoshop.

Think you would find them invaluable.

Hi Leah,

Just to let you know Jonathan Taylor is offering free introductory weekday workshops on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.  It gives a chance to prospective students to see if what he offers is what they are looking for, and also for him to evaluate students before his weekend courses.

Cheers,
Simon.
