There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Here's a follow up on how it went.

Took the 70-200 in to Canon and they were very courteous and professional. I asked about talking to a technician to be sure they understood the issue and the counter person immediately called back and had a technician come out to talk to me. He understood the problem and said he would have to open it and check but would let me know in 2 days and that it could take up to about 2 weeks to fix. Minimum charge was 1200 baht for opening, checking and cleaning, and they would let me know if they needed to do more and if it would cost more before proceeding further. Great!

Next morning I got a call that he had checked it and it was just a simple cleaning and I could pick it up any time. It was fixed and working fine. I went in during the afternoon and picked it up. I was a happy camper as I had been preparing myself for a larger bill. Haven't been out shooting with it yet but it looks nice and clean and it does work.

While there I asked the tech about my focus issue and he said that they could calibrate my 24-70 to my body for 300 baht and it would take about an hour. So I decided to have them do that and wait around for it. Better than leaving it for some other return trip. They made up new paperwork and I waited around drinking some of their free mocha. Cool.

Just before closing they called me over and it was all done. I don't know if it was off spec before or not but apparently it's calibrated now. Only hitch I thought was that when I got it back they wanted 300 baht for each item - body and lens - total 600 baht (+tax). This surprised me as up til then they had been clear and totally above board. I was a little irritated but decided to be Thai about it and let it go. Not so much money but I do think they should tell what it's going to cost, really cost.

Bottom line - they did good and I wouldn't worry about these guys taking care of my stuff. And geez they're pretty busy in there. All sorts of people coming through with broken displays and whatnot. I like the free coffee. And not only that you can meet other photogs and make friends there too.
