There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Oh man, I wish I was in BKK at the time. Actually I wish I was in BKK, full stop.

Marc, I would also like to attend your studio lighting workshop on August 11th.  Thank you for keeping me informed.  Best wishes, Michael Reid

Marc,

I'd love to attend.  Place me down as tentative.  I might get booked that day for a sitting -- Saturdays are usually busy.  I will be in BKK then though.

I want to be sure of what we'll be doing though.  As I've told you before I'm not especially savvy when it comes to setting up the equipment myself.  I've tangled myself up quie a few times and found myself in a laughing puddle mess.  I really want to be sure I'm learning all of the very basics about getting the stuff set up in a hands on way.  I also want to be sure I get full instructions invloving how to use all of the equipment with understanding of all of the settings.

I am a natural light shooter as you know and my compositions are fine.  I am a lot less concerned about having time to actually shoot and work with the models than I am about knowing what the hell it is I'm working with.  I have a light set I've taken out of the box maybe twice and I want to be sure if I do this workshop with you I will be able to actually use it without turning everything into a pretzel.  I realize there are technicians setting the stuff up and I want to be hanging out with them because I probably need to.

Can you maybe write a bit about how much we'll be focusing on set up and if you'll be able to deal with people like me?  I also refuse to go to a workshop again just to fall into a swarm of pretentious photographers who are too proud to admit their they're to learn anything.  I'm a pro and I do well in my realm of work, but I will enter with "CENSORED WORD" on my forehead.

Thanks, Marc.  It will be great to hopefully meet you in person (finally).  Glad to know you're well.  Angela Stott

Count me in Marc!

"I will be standing next to each participant as they are shooting with the model to help coach them on their shooting techniques." - Is is ok if I stand next to you while you stand next to the other participants Wink

Apologies for having been so confusing in my first post.

My question is:  If there is a way to quantify:  What percentage of this workshop will be focused on the technical aspect vs the artistic aspect?

Happy Birthday David!

Thank you to all of those have who signed up so far. Confirmed so far are David Procter, CW Lawrence, Michael Reid, and Markus Stass. Angela is tentative. Please note though a tentative place wont be held if the total number of confirmed participants reaches 12. I am so sorry too Alex that you wont be able to make it, would have been great to have you along. In answer to questions so far:

The studio is a good sized space and people are welcome and encouraged to stand around behind the person who is shooting and listen to my comments. There is also a separate seating room in the studio where people will be welcome to sit if they prefer to relax and have something to drink instead of watching the other shooters.

I also wanted to mention that I was not planning to direct the model on poses in order to allow each photographer to exercise their own ideas. Even though the model will be quite experienced and professional it is very important for a photographer to develop his/her own skills in communicating with their subjects. If though you want me to direct the model I can, but I think it is best if people get experience in developing their own skills in this area.

Angela, this workshop will be a mix of light technical instruction and shooting. The emphasis is more on the hands-on part of shooting using studio lighting while gaining an understanding of the main basic types of studio lighting setups. There will be some explanation of equipment and the setups as I mentioned, but unfortunately there wont be ample time to make the workshop technically intensive. As for the lighting technicians, they don't speak much English and will need to stay focused on getting things setup for the workshop. I rather people not talk to them while they are working, but once they are done people are welcome to chat with them if they like away from the area where the shooting is going on.

Question: will it be possible to get model releases from the models for the shots we make during the workshop?

Thank you. Confirmed so far are the following 6 people: David Procter, CW Lawrence, Michael Reid, Markus Stass, Jorgen Udvang and Matt Aho. I know 3 of you personally so far and a nice group of people. I am sure this is going to be fun  Wink

Jorgen, there will likely only be one model for simplicity purposes. I can offer a model release for all portfolio usage purposes for sure. What are you thinking you might want to use the images for?

I don't know yet, but if any, it would be for stock or other commercial purposes. I don't know how relevant it would be though. I do this because I lack lighting (and general studio) skills.

I look very much forward to this btw. A great opportunity to learn something useful and meet others photographers at the same time   :)

Jorgen - The main intent of the workshop is for people to gain some knowledge and experience shooting with studio lighting and to create some images they can put in their portfolio, but not to create commercial imagery. Having said that, I don't think the sort of pictures of the model we will be shooting will have any editorial stock value anyway. In fact, most stock agencies won't accept the sort of images we will be shooting I don't believe. So I don't think there will be anything lost in that area. I hope that helps.  :)

No problem. I will be there to learn. I'm looking very much forward to the event  :)
