There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

This guy, American or Canadian by his accent, set up in Chiang Mai's Sunday walking market to play for change -- right in front of a little hill tribe girl dancing for the same. (She looks mad in the pic, but really she's just dancing.)

Canon 7s, Cosina-Voigtlander 35/2.5 pancake, Tmax 100

You can read his signs better in the larger size:

This is a nice pic of an unfortunate situation.  I have -4 sympathy for travelers who come to Thailand and proceed to spend all their money on drugs, booze and prostitutes.  Its real hard to feel sympathy for bums like that when there are so many people in the region who have things very rough.

Curious what his "Please Help" sign says. Can you interpret?

His English sign says:

"Please Help. Been stuck in Thailand for 8 months. Trying to save enough to get home. Anything would help. Even 5 baht. Thank you. Enjoy the tunes!"

It was fading daylight, so I was shooting pretty wide open, and the sign was mostly lost.

If anyone can translate the Thai sign, I'm curious as to how that one is worded as well. (try the version in Flickr link)

Cheers,
Rick

Thank you. That is interesting. I once saw a guy on the fly over by MBK with a sign that said something like he was 300 baht short for a plane ticket home. In fact, I think I saw him there more than once within a 3-4 day period. Not sure he was trading any music for the donations from what I recall, but I can't imagine it would be very difficult to raise 300 Baht if that is all one was short for a plane ticket home. Seemed like a tricky ploy to raise a series of 300 Baht donations, but I could be wrong.

In Thai.
' no money to buy ticket home, please help!'

For the 8 months period, I think he can read and write Thai and try to earn a living there  Grin

thanks for the Thai translation, Konthai. You know, though, in order for him to actually work his way toward a ticket back home, he might have to get his hair cut. Oh woe.  Roll Eyes  Grin
