There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

I've been toying with the idea of opening an exhibition space in Bangkok with the specific aim of promoting photography. It would not be a business as such (with the exception of prints for sale) rather a place where photographers could show (and possible sell) their work, make connections or just meet to obsess about the craft. This would be non-profit making and could just be an extension of my home and studio.
These are very early thoughts and I've not considered venues or any specifics so I'd really appreciate any thoughts even if it's to say that I'm being a lunatic and it's the last thing Bangkok needs.
What do you think?

Great idea David, I especially like the idea of a meetingplace for photographers, when I was still living in Holland in my hometown there was a bar where a lot off photographers (professionals and amateurs) came to talk, and exhibited work, a very good/inspiring place.

(of course you're a lunatic for wanting to do this but who cares  :P)

I agree with Bjorn David, about the exhibition space that is Wink, and would like to add if you decided to start such a venture and needed any support I'd be available.

Simon.

Excellent idea, pity I do not live in Thailand :-). If this is organised, I will be more than happy to contribute some of my images to the exhibition upon my next visit to the beloved country.

I'm very down with this too. Maybe a small studio space too? Cheesy Either way, meeting up face to face with a comfortable familiar space would be great.

Super feedback so far. thnaks everyone.
This is going to take some careful planning and I dont foresee it happening this year but I'll keep you informed.
I have some excellent connections here in Bangkok and already shortlist of some very talented photographers who would like to exhibit. In these early days the more I think about it the more it excites me.
Bjorn, that is just the place I'd like this to be.
Thanks Simon, I'd certainly appreciate all the input you can give and definately when things start movin along.
Alex, move to Thailand!
And Charles the studio space is a definate; the amount of props, bits of material and lights in my condo is no joke!
Thanks again all

Well if you need any help to get this going, I'd love to do what I can. I should be in Bangkok for at least another year...

I am sorry that I am a little late on this thread, but someone you might want to talk to if you are seriously thinking about a gallery project this is Mason Florence. He runs the gallery part of Tamarind Cafe which is called Gallery F-Stop and he is always looking for people who want to exhibit and sometimes people who may want to get involved in helping with the gallery. You can drop him an e-mail at
Code:
mason@talisman-media.com
and use my name as an introduction. He might be able to offer some insight as well. He is certainly someone who has been trying to increase the level of interest in photography in Bangkok as an art form for the last 4-5 years. Hope this helps.

Thanks Marc,
I visit f-stop frequently and it's a super set up.
I actually met you briefly there once whilst you were conducting a course up in the mezzanine.
I've been talking to a number of people who run galleries and I will be sure to contact Mason.
Thanks for the input.

David--Go for it! It is always great to get together with other photographers not only for the pleasure of seeing some nice work hopefully but also for the feedback. I always love photographing the same thing as a few others, then looking at the different results--one can learn a lot from this. Sometimes though I have to think "Where was I and what was I doing!?" when someone next to me comes up with an awesome pic and I did not.   Embarrassed  Luckily it also goes the other way sometimes.  Grin

Thanks for your response and support,
The gallery is still very much at the forefront of my mind,
however although I am continuing to plan and gather support nothing can really happen
until I find a suitable property.
I'll keep you informed.
