"But to believe that you can always get great results out of a great lighting and subject situation by having only a clunky old camera and one 50mm lens to capture it is not going to work either."

Well sounds like you'd be in Henri Cartier Bresson's shoes then Wink

"So maybe the right approach is that you need better equipment if and only when you feel there are technical limitations to the equipment you presently have and you feel you could be doing more by going to the next level."

Exactly.

Not wanting to dig up an old thread but reading the responses have unfortunately made up my mind to switch systems - not being influenced by marketing hype and all :)

I work with a lot of low light situations (ie. shows, band performances and hopefully theatre plays soon) and really need the low noise at high ISO.

I moved from the D70 to the D2Xs, but I'm going to be in the process of switching to a 5D (can't afford the 1Ds :P).  Can anybody who's moved from Nikon over to Canon share their experience in terms of getting used to working in manual mode (ie. changing shutter speeds, aperture, etc)?  I've tried to use a Canon 20D before but it irked me up the wall trying to work in Manual mode.  Is it just a case of getting used to it?

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Wayne

Wayne--I had switched over from a Nikon film camera to the 20D, and though obviously different was not too long before many things became 2nd nature. Upgraded to the 5D and having the same layout as the 20D was no different. So it is probably just getting used to the differences. The 5D really shines in low light situations.

Thanks David for the clarification.  There are a few things I'll miss from the D2Xs but it will limit me in the low light in the long run so hasn't been an easy decision.  Almost like breaking up a long term relationship with someone.
