Pai is an interesting place and definately worth a visit. It kind of has a reputation as a hippie hang-out, but it is much more than that. The road getting up there though is enough to turn your stomach over, and when you get there it is this valley in the middle of nowhere with a river running through the middle of it, but in the wintertime it is a great place just to take some snaps or rice fields, hills, and foot bridges and chill out for a while. It is inexpensive and lots of little artsy cafes and restaurants to keep you meandering and relaxing while getting away from the hustle and bustle of other places in Thailand. I definitely reccomend it for unwinding and enjoying a bit of Thai rural life with pretty much all the modern conveniences. Attached is a shot taken in the morning during sunrise along the river behind the cottages where I was staying.

I've always wanted to go to the Pai area and your pictures and related experiences confirm that.  Thanks for posting the pic as well as the useful information.

God, do I remember that road! We had been driving down for an hour when I realized I had forgotten something in the GH (was actually teepee style huts by the river), had to turn around. Then we almost got hit by a tire, as a truck coming down at an unwise speed had just lost it. It missed our windshield by a couple foot!  yes, I do remember Pai...

It was freezing cold in the morning, and seeing your nice river landscape, it seem that is the kind of morning you had too.

Yes, the morning was very cold, but wonderful to sit at a soi-side cafe and sip a hot drink relaxing while the sun warms everything up.
