There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

I'd like to buy some gel to balance my flashes with ambient color temperature. If you're in a neon lit room for example, you'd have to put a greenish gel on the flash. In a tungsten lit room, a warmer gel. Fotofile had no idea what I was talking about when I asked them. Anybody know where to get this?

Also, to put them on the flash, the simplest is velcro. Where could I get that?

So... velcro, gels.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I buy Velcro at neighborhood stores that stock pens paper and pads for students. They usually have it in bulk rolls.
Don't know what to ask for. A show and tell sample always works.

Thanks Fred. I'll try Office Center.

I'm still looking for the gel though. Any help would be much appreciated.

In a pinch I have used the colored plastic file folders also sold at stores like office center. For a recent job, I used a blue plastic folder folded in half:

CWLawrence recalled a "ah-ha". I saw a woman once photo floral display. She used plastic containers like Tupperware. Had a bunch of them of various color she simply inverted over her flash. Just a thought.
That's what photography is all about anyhow - innovation.

I am not sure how you can attach it to your flash, but Bogen makes gel sheets that will bring the temperature of your flash down from their typical temperature of about 6,000Kva closer to 5,200Kva, which is a warmer daylight color. They offer a variety pack of cool/warm colors and the one within that pack you would want is #103 “Straw”. The pack is available here: http://www.canogacamera.com/detail.aspx?ID=11131

Maybe you can cut the gel up into small pieces and stick it onto your flash somehow.

While searching for something else on eBay, I came across these flash diffusers, one of which is a warm tone color. These might be a better solution for your flash rather than a gel since they will stay in place. I have a couple of them in white, but the warm toned ones will probably do the trick for you.

I am not sure if your flash is a Nikon, Canon or something else, but if you do a search on eBay for Omni Flash Diffuser you will find these for all makes and models:

Thank you Marc. Simple sheets of gel that I can cut up to fit my flash are definitely what I'm looking for. So you don't know a place that sells that in BKK?

Sorry, but I don't. I bought mine from B&H when I was in NYC. You could try Kiti International (they have a big Minolta sign outside and lots of copiers in the window) on Silom Soi Convent, but I am not certain they carry anything on that. They do have some studio lighting stuff though so just a thought.

No worries Gregoire and your welcome. You would probably do just fine. Eventually you would stumble onto things as I have been doing for quite some time already. Stumbling around that is  Wink

I've since been to New York and to B&H and forgot to buy them! And Soi Convent is across from my office... But I guess I don't feel the need for them that often after all. Thanks for reminding me about it!

You could also possibly buy some small pieces from Pro Center. I know he has some blue colored gels to use with tungsten lighting to make it cooler, which i got from him for some of my tungsten hot-lights, but not sure what else he has. You can check if you are interested.
