There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Author Topic: Questions About Medium Format Film, Cross Processing, Labs and More!  (Read 1369 times)

I just acquired two medium format cameras, a Seagull & a Holga (fun fun!), and I would like to ask everyone a few questions about medium format:

1) Does anyone recommend a place to purchase medium format (120) film? I found a shop on the ground floor of MBK which has two types.. I was hoping for more selection, but at least I found one place.
2) Does anyone recommend a lab to process the film? I want contact sheets too, and would love to find a lab which could do fun stuff like cross process. It's ok if they don't speak English.
3) Does anyone recommend a place to scan negatives to digital format? Hopefully it'll be the same place as #2.
4) This may be a stupid question, but typically do labs cut medium format film into sections like 35mm? I shot a few rolls overlapping, so I'd rather not have them cut. I have no idea what is typical because this is my first time playing with medium format.

Sorry if this is redundant, for some reason the 'Lomo, Polaroid, and other "alternative" film processes' category only shows two replies, even though it says it has 24. Weird.

Hello again!
I just emailed IQ Labs (been using their services already to print digital photos), and they will cross process. They cut the negatives to do a contact sheet. They also do film scanning, and I believe they need to cut the negatives to scan them too.

IQ Labs is really good, if the most expensive. I'd stick with them.

If you're not afraid of fingerprints and scratches (I mean, with the Holga, you could even consider that added value), try Asia Slide Photo Lab (BTS Phaya Thai) who develop a roll of 120 negative for 30 baht! Their scanning is just as bad as their developing, and just as cheap. They sell film as well, and have a better selection than MBK, but not great either. You know different film produces very very different results when x-processed so you might want to try several.

Just curious, where did you buy your cameras?

Hey Gregoire,
Thanks for the recommendations. I bought my cameras at B&H in New York and hand carried them back with me last week.

The place you would probably find the remaining selection of MF film being sold in Thailand is in that digital print lab district on Phaholyothin Road opposite of Central Lad Prao. Take the subway to the Phaholyothin station stop, exit the station at exit #4 for Tesco Lotus, turn right when you get out of the station, and go in and out of the stores along the road there going down towards the direction of Lotus. Photo City might have some as well as Hung & Na and Master Lab. You just need to take a look around. There are also probably places in China Town, a shop here or there in MBK or on Silom that has a bit, but I would think that area I suggested would give you the chance to check a lot of shops in one go and prices would be better than the shops in the more central part of town as well.

High quality film scanning info is here: http://www.photographythailand.com/Forum/index.php/topic,259.0.html

Hope this helps.

A 50MB TIFF file at IQ Labs is 400 baht no less for just one picture. I got an Epson 4990 flatbed scanner (about 17 000 baht) and it's been a good inverstment I think. I just get my film developed (don't even get contact sheets) and do the rest at home.
