congrats, I have no idea, it looks pretty close in design to what I have, Amazon.com had 3 happy customers telling about it, plenty of review links from google, seems all legit. Now shoot away without fear (well, except for shutter life)!

Looking at the photo of the Wolverine 7040 it looks identical to the Vosonic 2160 which I have. I'm sure it's the same unit. I suspect they repackage the Vosonic. You should be happy with it. It's very simple to use and works well. Note that when I got mine it came with a huge wall wart that I really wouldn't want to carry around in my backpack. It uses a heavy transformer. But I found that you can replace it with the lightweight power adapter for my Nokia 6100 (and other models). It still works though I don't think it charges up as quickly. I figured this out when I saw that they were using the battery from a Nokia phone inside. The connector socket is a bit tight but does fit. This also means that it makes good sense to buy an extra battery in case you run out and need emergency capacity. Chargers and batteries like this are very cheap here in Bkk so it's a good place to buy them. Probably about 100 baht ($2.50) for each here at a regular shop and if you go to Sampeng wholesale area you can get the chargers for 25 baht and abtteries for 60 baht. Since I carry my phone with me I need the charger anyway so it suits me well to have one charger for both.

As mentioned before with this unit make sure the firmware is the latest by checking the company web site support area. I found that the unit I bought had old firmware and it had some trouble with large 2GB cards. Easily fixed.

newbie here.

spent 3 weeks in thailand last year, used about 7gb worth of compact flash cards (rebel xt), all jpegs.
took a 2gb card.  had to buy 5 more 1gb cards in bangkok.  kept all images on cards until i got home.
mostly serious amateur travel shots but some beyond that.

leaving next month for 4 weeks, will be in the northeast mainly.
it's been suggested that i shoot raw + jpeg.  backup to my 30gb ipod and just enjoy myself.
have never shot raw before and concerned about "how many cards" to take.
if i were to just shoot jpeg, i would take what i already have.

i think i want my cake and be able to eat it too.
i want to be able to backup to the ipod so that i can format the cards and not have to take too many AND still have the security of having the files on the cards.  that's not asking too much-is it??

the problem is my paranoia- transferring to the ipod and then formatting the card.  largest city i will be around will be khon kaen.  i suppose i could supplement the ipod by also transferring files to a dvd (if i can find a place able to do that)

i feel better already, just putting it all down.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Go for quality not quantity!
If you click click click click less it may force you to be more selecctive and get some better shots.
If not take all your cards, theyre not exactly heavy or take up so much space.
You can always find somehwere to upload/download to in larger towns and cities ar some point in your trip.

Personally, I would not feel secure travelling with less than 2 backup drives. I say this because the first one is not really a backup once you clear out your memory cards. Meaning it becomes your primary storage device for those pictures. The second one would actually be the backup. The point being you never want to trust storage to one device only or you really risk losing stuff. It happens all the time. Now I have enough memory cards not to need drive backups anymore for much of my work and my camera holds two memory cards (an SD and a CF) and records all pictures to both cards simultaneous. So I always have backups being created in real time. Before I had enough cards though I used to backup to two Vosonic portable drives before clearing out my memory cards. I hope this helps.

yes, it does.
it also confirms my paranoia about clearing out the cards.

Clearing cards is fine, as long as you can first transfer to two other storage devices before clearing them out.

i already have an ipod.  will now get another portable drive.
that should put my mind at ease.

from the little i've read, ipod transfer seems kinda slow.
do you have the model # of the vosonic?

Two points I wish to add is

1. As 500gb hard drives are becoming cheaper, the price of 320gb have plummited. Make sure your portable power supplies too run these spinners more than power adequate and stable in current.

2. Always have some recovery software on hand. ( Unless you want to go back and do it all again...)
