Hi all,

I am in the market for a new lens and would like to see your list of the top five lenses to have. Think about sharpness, quality, utility, price, etc. What are THE five lenses you would like to own?

Can't us Canon guys post as well? Wink :P

You may get a couple of ideas if we did, as both companies basically use the same focal lengths with similar quality of glass.

well... except the Nikon 12-24 cost twice the price of the Canon ES-S 10-20 and is not as good! I'd get the Tokina.

As for Nikon's 17-55 f/2.8, it costs as much as Canon's but doesn't have IS! I'd get the Tamron 17-50.

My brother has Nikon's 50mm f/1.4, and 28mm f/2.8 and Sigma's 150mm macro and he loves them all.

CW,

Here is my selection:

Lens AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF
Lens AF-S DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
Lens AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D
Lens AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D
Lens AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D

To see samples with those lenses, go to my page http://www.thaiworldview.com/photo/profile.htm#lens and select the lens/body.

I like low light shots.

OK, OK - I give Roll Eyes ; you Canon people can post your lens' too (and a Nikon usable doppleganger if applicable)

And I if Tokina, Sigma, or Tamron make a comparable lens to a Nikkor then I will go with the former, no problem.

For good reviews on Nikon lenses herewith two links that is worth checking out;
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/nikkor.htm
http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_surv.html

I guess it depends on what you shoot, herewith what I use;
Lens one on body one AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 3.5 to 5.6 G ED DX VR
Lens two on body two AF-S Nikkor 12-24mm F4 G ED DX
Lens three mostly used for theater work AF-S VR Nikkor 70-200 mm F2.8 G ED
Lens four mostly used in the African bush, where we come from AF Vr Nikkor 80-400 F4.5 to 5.6 D ED

Well, my personal favourites are:

The so called 'holy trinity' of primes.

Canon 35L f1.4
Canon 85L f1.2
Canon 135L f2

and possibly the 300L f2.8

Leaving room for one more, and the only zoom in my list: the Canon 70-200L IS f2.8

That's leaving a huge chunk out at the bottom of the range, but Canon do not make an outstanding wide angle. I have the 17-40L but am sometimes left wanting.

Just a nice selection of teles and primes

Nikon 17-35mm 2.8
Nikon 28-70mm 2.8
Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 VR
Nikon 50 1.4
Nikon 85 1.4

Get a 1.7x teleconverter and you'll be sweet for basically any job you come across Wink  Couple that with a couple of D2Xss and things will be even sweeter Cheesy

Ugh. I don't know.  Huh

I have a friend's wedding coming up and I want to get a new lens 'cause I am still using the two kit lens that came with the D70 (the 18-75 and the 75-300). I'd like to start moving towards pro-equipment; some excellent lens' (in my meager price range) and maybe some day a new camera - D200 or the next model Nikon comes out with.

I also need a portable flash - thinking the SB-800 with a soft box, as I already have the SB-600. And a couple small accesories.

CW,

What about going for primes?

If you have a very limited budget, go for 50mm F/1.8.
If your budget is higher, go for Lens AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D or Lens AF Nikkor 35mm f/2.0D

It might also be worth your while to go and look at the big collection of secondhand lenses available at Fotofile, ground floor MBK.  I saw some good offers there last Saturday.
