There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Hi Chris,

The Siam Color Slide will have their next photo workshop on November 4th, 2006 at the Ratanakosin Hotel near Sanam Luang. The workshop starts at 9 am usually with photo contest by members (only slide films) which goes on until noon when there will be one hour lunch break and continue with the contest for another half hour or so after lunch. Following that there will be session for an invited guest speaker who is usually a seasoned photog. or someone working in the photo industry to give a talk on a photographic subject which will last about an hour. The last session is the photo session, usually a studio set up with varying subject matters (sometime a model at other times a Thai boxer etc. etc.)  for each work shop.

Above was the programme that I knew from attending in the past, I believe they still follow it but not a 100% sure. This club holds such meeting every two month. I'm sure there will be one or two people who can speak adequate English that can keep you company. You may attend as an observer and pay nothing but if you want to participate in the photo shoot then you'll have to pay between Baht 300.- 400 fee (covering model shoot, coffee/snacks, served just before the photo session) for each workshop. You can also elect to become a yearly or lifetime member. The workshop lasts unitl 4-4.30 pm. Usually around 25-30 people attend each workshop so they will have to take turn photographing the model but there'll be plenty of time for that. If you shoot only digital, then you can't participate in the contest but only as an observer. When I participated, I did so for the photo shoot only so I usually arrived there after lunch, by the way I only shoot digital. In any case, I haven't been there for nearly two years now so the schedule may change from what I just described above.

If you want, you can contact the current club chairman at 01 339 9199 (Wittaya) for more information.  Good luck. Kittiwat

For Simon and anyone else coming to Chiang Mai for Loy Kratong/Yipeng; appearantly, nobody really knows when and where big groups of lanterns are released at the same time. At the big temples (wat phra sing/wat chedi luang/etc.) they will start as soon as it's dark, and after that it's a constant stream of people coming to the temples with their lanterns. So I guess you just have to go to one of those temples and be there for a while to wait for a group of people.
