There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Hi All,

forum is looking good.  Just taking my time reading through some of it right now.  I've got a few photos to post but am not really in the same league as most of the other members - this is good for me but perhaps not so good for them.

I did have 1 question - most of my fanourite images are loaded onto Flickr already.  If I would like to embed one of them into a post here rather than upload the image itself - can I do this?  I would imagine that this would save you a lot of hosting space if your members used a link rather than an image when uploading.  I did try posting a photo here just now (using the same method I use in Dpreview.com) but I had no success - photo appears as unavailable.  Perhaps you can advise.

Here's an example:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/markmaclean/88488570/ - this is the web address of the photo

I'm off to read your other articles.  Thanks for starting this site!

regards

Mark

Thank you Mark for your concern about saving hosting space on this forum, but for the moment there is lots of free server space so no need to be concerned about it. As for how to do what you want to do, I am not quite sure. Probably there is a way using the right HTML code, but I am not familiar with it. If you really would like to try and figure out a solution though you may try posting a message to one of the user forums on http://www.simplemachines.org/community/ which is the user forum of the company that produces the software which runs our forum. Unfortunately though I needed to delete the HTML code you had put into your message as I think it might have caused an error in the forum's data base.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing more of your image posts and I am sure others are as well.

You can add a photo in by link using the photo link button in the tool bar above the edit area (little photo icon 2nd from left), in which case you put your address between the tags that button inserts, or you can do it by hand almost as easily as well with code like:

Code:

<img src="_the_link_address_with_http_goes_here">

Just type that in and then use preview button to verfiy that the image is showing up. If it's not then you have mistyped the address or something in the html code. What you're doing is using the IMG tag and setting the source address. Other fancy things can be done but for that read up on HTML.

The benefit to doing this is that it does save server load, space and bandwidth for the forum and means you don't have to upload the image again. The downside is that if you remove your photos from that other place they will also show up "dead" in the forum here.

Chris :)
