The Joe Louis Peppet Theatre

Went with my class on a school trip to the Joe Louis puppet theatre in Lumphini last week. A part of Thai culture which is sadly diminishing with very people wishing to learn the art. Youre not actually permitted to take pictures but as i was there with the school i had the opportunity to do so.

Three people control each puppet, which takes incredible coordination.

Wow - I envy you being allowed to take pictures inside. Liked the second shot with the black background drawing the viewer to the puppet and puppeters. Sort of evokes the feeling of solitude and the loss of this artform to modern culture.
Went to the Theatre myself a few months ago and was very disappointed to see you were not allowed to take pics. Went in all the same and glad I did. On other occasions where I've visited a place to take photos and discovered it was not allowed I have simply left.
Thanks for posting these pics.

Just teasing, David, but too bad you did not bring your new "studio" lights, on that first shot. What lens did you use?

Simon, did you ask for permission to take photos on places that normally didn't allow it?
Thais are usually not very strict about rules and often make exceptions.
(Unlike in US or Europe where people with a little authority loves to say no).
All you need to do is ask, explain your situation and you'll be surprised how often they give you permission.
It may be easier for me who speak thai, but it doesn't hurt to ask...

Actually if I see a sign that says "No Photography" I never ask - interesting to hear your comments. Next time I'm in that situation I'll remember your advice.
Thanks, Simon.
