There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

I hope this will create some discussion.

I am fairly new to more than just point and shoot photography.

I have discovered that the more I learn, the more I need to learn.

I have attended several different classes and seminars on photography and Photoshop

What I have learned from these classes is, that for a picture to look good, a person needs learn how to use depth of field, shutter speed, light and exposure to create the image desired.

Now with using Photoshop to make corrections, depth of field and shutter speed seems the most important part of the picture taking process, because shooting in RAW, you are able to make  changes to light, exposure, and other effects can be added.

More than once I have heard a photographer that is real good in Photoshop, say " As long as I get the the image, I can make the changes in Photoshop, just get the image"

For me personally, I want to learn picture taking and use Photoshop as little as possible. I have never shot RAW and I know very little about Photoshop.

I am interested in what others have to say on this subject.

Exposure is just as important if shooting raw as in shooting film.  If you underexpose (block up the shadows) or overexpose (blow the highlights), no amount of photoshopping will salvage the images.

Maybe I'm a purist, but I believe photography is about getting it as close to right in the camera.  Photoshop is used for minor fixes and adjustments.  But then I shot film for over 30 years (and slides at that).

Photoshop is fine for many things, but the more you are able to do to get the shot desired with your camera is that much less time you will have to spend working in Photoshop or any other image editing program. I am a digital user, but I also remember with slides it was less time spent as the shop doing the processing did a lot of the work, and now the digital photographer is doing the work himself. But would I want to go back?, no--more time for all the  advantages is a small price to pay.
