There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

These pictures were taken from color slides found at the Library of Congress. They are dated between 1939-1943.

The pictures are so clear and the color is so vibrant, it looks as though they were taken just yesterday.

I'm surprised to see people (families) living in log cabins in the 40's.

Great pics, especially #70.

Marc--Had seen these before and they are striking. What was so amazing to me was seeing these in color, have seen many wonderful classic photos by these photographers but always b/w. They all worked for the FSA/OWI (Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farm_Security_Administration   http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/fsachtml/fsowhome.html  A lot if not all of the photos are in this book, which sadly seems to have gone out of print.  http://www.amazon.com/Bound-Glory-America-Color-1939-43/dp/0810943484/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328335204&sr=1-3

The Denver Post has links to some great collections of pics I have seen previously. Check out this one of Russian photos in color from the early 1900's. . http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2009/10/21/color-photography-from-russian-in-the-early-1900s/?source=ARK_plog  There is also a book for these.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0803769962/ref=oh_o03_s00_i00_details

If interested keep checking Amazon and other sources as new copies can turn up occasionally, much cheaper than listed here. I bought new copies of both within the let few years for maybe $35 each.

Marc I really enjoyed looking at these images; thanks! That generation endured hardships that most of us can never imagine.
As I was viewing the images of children a thought crossed my mind and I was not going to comment on it except in reading the comments at the end; the second posters said it for me:

Nice older photos. Interesting to note that in photos of Caucasian children, they are described as “children”, and in photos of black children, they are described as “African American children”. Why not describe the whites as “European American children”? or all of them as “children”?

Glad everyone liked these. There is also a book by Avedon of B&W portraits worth checking out called In The American West. Some powerful stark portraits of working class Americans across the mid west. People who work in slaughter houses, prison inmates, etc. Some powerfully emotive images. This one kind of sums it up a bit:

Love to watch old photographs as these. Very rarely you can find them in color.
