There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Yes, so many of these interesting photo events are always either in the states or Europe of course and I never make it to any of them. I am going to try and make a real effort to go to Photokina though in Cologne Germany 2012.

Marc--Never having been to Photokina not sure whether it also features photos on display, I do know it is a major showcase for camera gear. Paris Photo http://www.parisphoto.fr/ is not for gear, but is a vast display of old and contemporary works. Have been to it a few times and there are some wonderful things and also some not so wonderful--but perhaps some of what I like someone else would not and vice versa. It features dealers from around the world, some who are nice and down to earth and some who are so pretentious you could cut the air around them with a knife. What I have noticed is many items are not priced, as I think the price changes according to who walks in the booth. I was in one booth and a well dressed Japanese gentleman walked in and the dealer said "Special price, 40,000 Euros". It was all I could do not to ask her what would be the non special price--but I was still looking at photos and did not want to get the evil eye and be thrown out of her booth.  Laugh
Shame we do not have more exhibitions and shows locally, but there does seem to be a lot more now than there used to be--but this is individual galleries, not a massive show.. Many dealers are trying to cultivate the Chinese market with the new found wealth there.

David - Your impressions in general are similar to mine. I think Photokina is purely a camera equipment fair. If you want to see a showcase of fine art photography though and have never been to the International Center Of Photography (ICP- www.icp.org) in Manhattan it is usually worth a visit. A museum purely dedicated to photography and usually has 3-5 exhibits and installations running at a time. You can always check the web site to see what is on display at any given time and Friday afternoons I think is the best time to go because the entrance fee is basically waived to "by donation" in any amount. Also, like the Paris Photo show, some of the exhibitions are interesting, others aren't so much.

I tend to stay away from galleries in general for the reasons you mentioned. Filled with capitalistic pretentious gallery owners who are only interested in spending time with you if you are there to spend big money. I visited quite a few once around Chelsea, which is where most of the photo galleries selling photos are in NYC. Again, much of what I saw was not so interesting in terms of content and they are all using buzz words like "Silver Gelatin Prints" to try and justify the high costs and quality of their wares. One gallery in NYC though which sometimes gets some interesting stuff is the Bruce Silverstien Gallery. Also in Chelsea and a small gallery in a nice old building. If he is not busy he is also more willing to chat with visitors than in some of the other galleries.

If you want to see a true indescribable phenomenon in the fine art photo world with ordinary looking photos selling for hideous amounts of money, then look up Andreas Gursky. Some of his financial success comes from his pedigree of where he studied photography in Germany together with the fact that he studied at a time when a number of the late 20th century German greats were coming of age.

I'm with you, Marc. Have been to Photokina many time since the 70'th because it's near my hometown. There a many galleries to explore not only at the exhibition ground but also throughout the city of Köln (Cologne)

Marc--Funny you mention International Center of Photography for 2 reasons. 1st--pretty sure it was there that I saw an exhibition of W. Eugene Smith back when I was a kid--the show was about 1970. Opened my eyes wide to the power of photography as a medium for change (his Minamata work) and also how a photograph can just be very moving (his A Walk to Paradise Garden which I found out years later were of his children, which was the closing image at the famous Family of Man show at Museum of Modern Art in 1955). http://i12bent.tumblr.com/post/308277964/w-eugene-smith-a-walk-to-paradise-garden-1946      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Family_of_Man.

2nd--Just saw this link the other day about renovations at the plaza surrounding the ICP.   http://www.scoutingny.com/?p=3804  Worth looking at as it is kind of interesting and not what one expects.  Shocked
