On 4 March I read the following unbelievable article in the Bangkok Post:
Canon Hi-tech spent 5 billion baht to build a second ink-jet printer factory in Nakhon Ratchasima that is due to start operations in November. "Once production starts, Thailand will become the world's largest manufacturing base for Canon. We are also studying building a micro 4/3 digital camera factory here."  Head Scratch

That is interesting. Nikon has always had one of their biggest factories in Ayuthaya, but apparently had some layoffs as well when the global economic crisis started taking hold.

I also noticed in that article they claim to have 66% of the DSLR market. I remember in the days of film that Nikon was a more dominant brand in Thailand. I guess that has changed.

Yeah, neither Canon or Nikon have entered the EVIL market. It was even predicted that the mirrorless market (with 60% annual growth) will surpass the DSLR market in 2012 or 2013.

I must have missed something. Where does it say that Canon will enter the 4/3rds arena?

This is all I managed to read. Perhaps it's been truncated coz it's too old:

"...Canon expects revenue of 10 billion baht in 2012, with a goal of becoming the market leader in compact digital cameras in Thailand, up from third place now, says Wataru Nishioka, president and CEO of Canon Marketing (Thailand).

In light of the growing economy, the company projects revenue growth of 20% to at least 9 billion baht this year, mainly driven by digital cameras, printers and photocopier products, with earnings of 5.07 billion, 2.99 billion and 1.24 billion baht respectively.

"We are confident we can achieve 10 billion baht in sales by 2012 given the strong growth of overall business as well as our competitive prices," said Mr Nishioka...."
