Happy New Year To All Clapping

Since everyone had so much fun on our last photo outing to China Town in early December, I have decided to organize another photo outing to take place before the start of the hot season this new year in Thailand  Cool

I am pleased to announce that Mark Standen will again be joining the outing and will be available to assist and offer other people advice and ideas on shooting during the outing. The purpose of the outing is as always just a casual get together for photo enthusiasts to meet one another, to go out shooting together as a group, and to just have some fun Thumbs Up Wink

THE DETAILS:

The Date: Saturday, February 5, 2011.
The Meeting Time: 14:00-17:00
The Meeting Location: Wat Suthat Temple - Bamrung Muang Road - Bangkok

PHOTO OUTING THEME:

The purpose is for everyone to shoot together within the same fixed location, while practicing on how to capture the finer details of a location as a travel photographer. The emphasis will be on the isolation of subjects through the lens, rather than just shooting the obvious wide angle postcard shots.

We should capture photos in a way that shows the subtle details that one would notice with their own eyes when walking through a new location as a traveler for the first time. This means shooting tightly cropped subjects and controlling depth of field by blurring out the backgrounds in order to help emphasize the details in your shots and make your photos more intimate and outstanding.

Mark Standen has photographed at this temple many times and also photographed and published a book about Wat Suthat for the temple. So he has a lot of experience and knows the temple grounds very well, which is great for all of us. Mark and I chose this temple as the location for our outing as Mark suggested it is one of the most diverse temples to photograph in Bangkok, offering many different buildings and subjects that we can shoot. Following are some of the things we will be able to shoot during our outing:

Courtyards, Gardens, Statues, Gable Details, Roof Details, Interiors, Cloisters, Buddha Images, Murals, Religious Architecture, Vernacular Architecture, The Bell Tower, Doorways, Windows, Bas-Reliefs, Shrines, The Monastery, The Ordination Hall, Monks, Tourists, Local People Making Merit & Prayers, Patterns, Candles, Garlands, and Textured Surfaces.

EQUIPMENT:

There are no special camera equipment requirements, but if you have a long zoom or telephoto lens it will help you to be able to isolate your subjects better and blur out the backgrounds. You are also welcome to bring a tripod, which will help you to shoot in the darker areas which have minimal ambient light and will require slower shutter speeds.

THE FINER DETAILS:

We will meet at the entrance of the temple at 2:00 pm. There is a temple entrance fee of 20 Baht for foreigners and entrance is free for Thai nationals. We will shoot for approximately 3 hours. Once the shooting is over, everyone is welcome to go to eat some local food and have a cold drink together at a restaurant I have in mind which is about 2 blocks walking distance from the temple.

POST OUTING RECAP:

All participants will have an opportunity after the outing to post their best photos from the outing to a special Gallery on the Forum web site. Photos will be posted to a new Gallery section on the Forum which I will create specifically for photos taken during this photo outing to make it easy for everyone to see each others photos from the outing. Everyone can also use the Gallery system to comment on one an others photos if they like.

COST:

There is no cost for the outing, but the outing is only open to members who support the Forum with a small donation. If you are not yet a supporter of this Forum, then you can click on the following link to make a small donation of any amount and join the photo outing: http://www.photographythailand.com/donations.html

If you are already a Forum Supporter and/or made a donation to the Forum for the last outing, then there is no cost to you at all to join this outing.

SIGN-UP FOR THE OUTING:

If would like to join the outing, then please sign-up by posting a message onto this message post to say you will be joining so that we know to expect you.

UPDATES:

If there are any changes or updates between now and the date of the outing, I will add the updates to this post so that everyone can stay updated about the outing.

QUESTIONS:

If you have any questions about the outing then please feel free to post them here as well.

Looking forward to seeing you all there! Two Thumbs Up

Wish I could join you, the lucky ones in February! Unfortunately have to go back to the much dreaded farangland in a couple of weeks  Sad

In Kanchanaburi now and off to Mae Sot tomorrow morning. So far have been to Kao Yai, Petchabun, Loei and Sukhothai. Mae Sot, Pai and Bangkok still to be covered.

Enjoy the photo outing and I am looking forward to seeing the results.

Happy New Year to all of you!

Till next time

Marc,

I will be traveling just prior to this and I am not sure if I will return in time, but once I finalize my travel plans and know if I can make it, I will RSVP for certain.

Thanks,

Because we are in Bangkok for holidays in that period, I'm glad to be joining this outing on the 5th.  I've been several times in Bangkok, but never visited Wat Suthat.  Recently I bought a DSLR (Nikon D3100), hope to get some tips. Koen Van de Sande

Hi Koen - Welcome and thank you for you kind donation. Coming all the way from Belgium I see and looking forward to seeing you on the outing. Personally I am a Canon user, but there should be some Nikon users in the group too. Anyway, the theme of the outing is focused more on practicing your style of picture taking more than anything. See you soon.

sounds like fun, count me in.

As far as apparel is concerned, when I go to a temple to pay respect, I always wear long pants. Would it be a good recommendation to say wear long pants, no cut off shirts, etc..?

Great Gregg. Glad to know you will be coming. Good point you raise about proper clothing attire as well. I didn't mention anything about it, but it would certainly be a good idea to dress respectfully in long pants and no cut-off shirts as you mentioned. Clean looking sandals are fine by the way for footwear, and I even recommend it since there are many areas of the temple where you are required to remove your shoes. So wearing shoes that slip on and off quickly just makes it easier. I will be wearing sandals myself. See you soon Gregg.
