The big Photokina imaging fair, which happens once every 2 years, kicks off in Cologne Germany later this month on Tuesday the 21st. It's the biggest international camera expo in the world. Looking forward to some exciting new announcements to be forthcoming on new equipment and technology. I wish I was going to be there in person:

Ray--the bright side is many of the goodies that are always announced are never released until a few months later, and then there is often another wait if it is a hot ticket item.

This is true David. I think though many manufacturers try to get the products to market actually before Christmas and by the end of November if possible in order to capitalize on Christmas sales.

Thanks for the reminder Mark
Used to be every four years I think in my day.
Back in the days when I had hair and it was a lot of fun to go. Stay on a river boat and eat lots of good German sausage.

These days its sit on your butt and catch up on everything via the web...

Used to be much healthier to go , even with all the beer and sausage.

Anyway lets hope they have lots new goodies for us all the drool over.  Shocked

Hahah, Adam, yeah, I would like to go myself sometime. Maybe in 2012. But I think it has been every 2 years for as long as I can remember. The same with the big PMA fair, which is also every 2 years in the states, now in Las Vegas: http://www.pmai.org/pma2011_home.aspx

Yes Mark, I had a look and it is as you say every two years it seams.

Think I was last there around 1984...

Never been to PMA, but seems strange that they have them running almost concurrently these days.

Anyway hope you make it in 2012. Perhaps consider getting a group to go from the forum even?

Yes, that would be fun to go with a group. I might be there anyway visiting family at that time I am hoping. The PMA and Photokina switch off every year. So basically you have one big imaging expo in either Europe or the United States each year. Having both of them take place every year would cause too much competition for the visitor pool I think. The PMA though captures more of the USA market and Photokina is of course the European market, but Photokina is also more internationally renowned and captures more interest from Asia I think than the PMA does in general. Normally Canon's bigger announcements occur at Photokina versus the PMA as far as I can remember and possibly the same for Nikon. Since medium and large format are a shrinking market at this point, even for the digital backs, I think most people will be watching Canon, Nikon, as well as Sony, Olympus and possibly Pentax and Minolta to see what they will be announcing.

Predictions?

I'm anxiously awaiting Canon or Nikon's answer to the emerging m4/3rds market. So far totally ignored by them but surely not for much longer?

9 days to go

Incidentally, accomodations in Las Vegas next year at the PMA will be lower than in Cologne Germany where Photokina is held. Weather in Vegas will be warmer too than in Cologne in September. I am not sure about airfares though. Food for thought.
