I was reading Wiki about filters and saw this:

Quote
Some lenses like Canon's L series lenses require the use of a filter to complete the weather sealing

Obviously Wikipedia has to be taken with a grain of salt so I decided to dig and see why they would post that.

From an old PotN post I found this:

Quote
Here's what the 16-35/2.8 II manual says:

"Although the lens is dust- and water-resistant, a Canon filter must be attached to the front of the lens for complete protection. Unless a protective filter is attached, the dust- and water-resistant features are not assured"

Gregg--Notice they say Canon filter.  Cheesy  I am photographing in the falling snow the last two days, and do I use a filter--no. Only polarizers or ND. I do see many people using UV/protection filters, but either they are stubborn or have not been told how different digital is than film and the reason why one does not want to use a UV filter with digital.

David- what part of Bangkok has snow!!! Laugh (I read you are on assignment, hopefully a nice place)

I understand the points made about not using UV filters except in extreme situations, and agree with them 100%. What I thought was funny was the "complete the weather sealing" statement.

totally off topic, but I thought this was kind of interesting. Look at the pics before scrolling down to see the front element...

Gregg--Snow in Japan, not BKK.  That weather sealing comment was funny. The link was kind of interesting, glad it was not my lens though.
