This year (10/10/10) is the 1,000th anniversary of the City of Hanoi. The celebrations cover the 1/10 to 10/10

As such I can only imagine some marvelous festivals, concerts, shows and the like with great photo opportunities.

Has any member visited Vietnam and what advice, precautions etc would you offer

Thank You

Hi Ray

Having lived and worked in Vietnam for several years, you can be assured that there will be plenty of good photographic opportunities.  Photography is not and issue as long as you don't try and photograph places such as Government buildings, Security offices etc.

On a personal note, keep your gear close and do not leave things lying around, they will disappear quickly.  When carrying gear keep it securely fastened to the body as motorcycle riders with a pillion passenger cruise the streets and will attempt to snatch valuables from unwitting tourists.  There have even been occasions where they have used knives to relieve tourist of shoulder bags by cutting the straps and riding off into the distance.

Ho Chi Minh City has a much higher incident rate for this type of crime however it was emerging in Hanoi when I left.  Its just something to be aware off when traveling in Vietnam.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I heard some activities in Hà Nội from October 1, 2010. Hope that it will be helpful for you!

- Circus shows under the motto “Hà Nội – The city for peace” at Thiền Quang Lake, Đông Kinh Nghĩa Thục Square and the National Circus.

- Music concerts by famous Vietnamese artists at the Hà Nội Opera House.

- Performance of ancient dances of Thăng Long–Hà Nội at the Lư Thái Tổ Monument.

- International music and stage festival with the participation of art troupes from some 1000-year-old cities in the world (around 29 troupes).

- A big concert performed by Vietnamese and foreign orchestras at the Hà Nội Opera House.

- The national press awarding ceremony on the 1000th Thăng Long–Hà Nội anniversary.

- The awarding ceremony of international competition “Hà Nội – Your Rendezvous”.

Hanoi is now upgrading the roads so it will be hard to travel now. I think u should wait 1 month next.

Good luck!
