Fun & Free Bangkok Photo Outing - Open To Everyone
«
on:
October 18, 2009, 05:01:30 PM »
As I started this photo community over 3 years ago, I decided it is time that I organize an outing for the members who will be present in Thailand in November. The purpose of the outing is to all be able to meet one another, make some new photo taking friends, go out shooting together, and have some fun.
Details are as follows:
The Date: Sunday, November 22, 2009. Rain Date: Sunday November 29, 2009.
The Meeting Time: 1:00 PM (13.00)
The Location: Bangkok - Lumpini Park - Bandstand. Enter from the Wireless Road Door opposite of Lumpini Police Station and walk straight across the open lawn to the Bandstand stage area.
Equipment Required: A Digital SLR Camera and either: 1- A long telephoto lens of about 200mm or 2 - Any medium to wide angle lens capable of focusing at close range. All lenses should be able to go to an F-Stop of F/4 or wider.
The Finer Details:
The photo shooting will last for 2 hours. All shooting must take place within the grounds of Lumpini Park. After the shoot is finished all participants will meet somewhere close by for a cold drink if they like. Location of the cold drink meet to be announced.
Shooting Follow Up:
All participants will have an opportunity to post up to 4 of their best photos from the outing to a Gallery on the Forum web site. Photos to be posted to a new Gallery section on the Forum specifically for photos taken during the outing. Everyone can also use the Forum Gallery system if they like to comment and rate one another’s photos.
Theme:
The theme of the outing has been set by me and will remain a secret until the day of the outing when I will give everyone a piece of paper covering the Theme in detail. I will then review the Theme with everyone present and answer any questions before the photo shooting starts. Shooting will start promptly at 2:00 pm (14:00) and run until 4:00 pm (16:00).
Signup:
If you would like to join the outing then please sign-up by posting a message onto this thread to say you will be joining.
If there are any changes or updates between now and the date of the outing, I will add the updates to this post so that people can return to this message to see updates about the outing.
If you have any questions about the outing please feel free to post them here as well.
As I mentioned above, this is an entirely free event so there are no costs involved.
If you would like to join the outing, but don’t have the right equipment, you can try contacting the following shop which rents camera equipment in Bangkok:
Khun Rachot - Pro Center, Ltd.
718/4 South Sathorn Road - Soi Suan Plu
(Corner of Soi 9 Suan Plu opposite Thai Immigration and the Suan Plu Post Office)
Tel. 02-679-3077-8
Note: This is a free outing open to all existing and new members of the Photography Thailand Forum. So you can sign up for a free Forum membership now and join the outing if you like.
Hoping to see you all there…

Thanks for signing up Ray and welcome to the Forum. This is the first event I am organizing like this outdoors (I did a studio lighting workshop for Forum members a couple of years ago). Assuming it goes well, then I may organize something like this a few times per year. See you at Lumpini.

Hi Marc,
Just came across your forum, very interested to participate in the outing, being just a recent DSLR convert myself. Would definitely like to come along to the event if that's okay and look forward to meeting the other like minded folks from the forum.
In terms of equipment I currently have the Canon EOS 500D with the kit 18-55mm lens and the 50mm F1.8 II prime, is that going to be sufficient do you think. Feel free to say no, gives me a good excuse to rent a 24-70 F2.8 or 24-105 F4 for the day :)

Hi Martin - Welcome and don't worry about being a beginner. This outing is meant to be fun and give people a chance to have a reason to go out and use their cameras and meet other people who like to go out shooting. If you already know how to use your camera that is the most important thing.
I think you should be fine with the 50mm lens in terms of the assignment I am going to give to everyone. If you want to rent one the 24-105mm would be more versatile in terms of focal length and focuses at close range. So I would suggest that one over the 24-70 if you want to rent one.
See you there...

Hi Adam - It wont be a difficult assignment. Creativity and control of the camera more than anything. So I don't think you will need to bend much if you don't want to. The time frame is listed in my original post. From 1PM to 4PM. 2 hours of shooting and 1 hour for briefing before the shoot. Hope to see you there :)

Hi Mark,
Sorry I should have been more clear, What I meant by conformation time frame. Was, do do need me to confirm defiantly by a certain date, so that you have a better idea of numbers that will show? Or just show up if I can make it?
Thanks Adam

Understood Adam, thanks. Yes, confirmation here would be best so that I have an idea of how many people to expect. It will make it easier for me to know then on the day who has arrived and who hasn't as we are gathering. If people just show up it is not so good as I plan to start going over the them of the shoot once all the people who I have on the list have arrived. There is no deadline to sign up I guess, but as soon as you can confirm would be best. Thanks.

Hi Mark, you can put me down as a probable, if anything happens that I can't I'll let you know, and will confirm later.
I know I'm going to be out of my depth regards photography mixing with you guy's, but what the hell, I'll probably learn more in two to three hours than Iv'e learned in the last two years since taking it up.
I now have a 5D mark 1, a 100 - 400L lense & a 24 - 105L lense, do I need anything smaller ? Tripod ?
By the way, I managed to buy a copy of your book a couple of weeks ago, brilliant.
Can you recommend a 3-4 star hotel near the Lumpini entrance, I will travel down on the Saturday by train from Chiangmai and make a w/e of it.

Sounds good Don. For sure you will learn something. Every photo shooting is an experience and I am still learning all the time. The 100-400 lens should be good, but that lens is difficult to hand hold at the wide aperture settings. Easy to blur the subject and better to use it with a tripod to be sure. The 24-105 is good too since you can focus at close range. Probably the better choice, but if you bring both you can experiment with both on the theme of the shooting.
Thank you for picking up a copy of the book.
Sorry, I don't know much about hotels in the area. I heard though recently from a friend that the Amari St. James on Sukhumvit Soi 26 is very nice and not too expensive. It is walking distance to the sky train, but not very close to Lumpini. Maybe have a look on the web.
