I am wondering if anyone knows about the Yi Peng festival this year in Chiang Mai? According to this site the dates are the 27th of October until the 2nd of November:

But I was wondering which day exactly they will have the big launch of the lanterns? If anyone has any info about it please post it here. Thanks.

Marc it's always the saturday before Loi Kratong, that would be oct. 24th this year, but to be sure i'll ask around and confirm.
It's not in the city but in Mae Jo, next to Mae Jo University. Be sure to go there in time because traffic is crazy and they don't stick to their time schedule.

At the Chiang Mai Guide's association they say that the mass release of Khom Loi that was planned for oct. 24 is cancelled due to flu risks, if I get more info I'll update.

Thanks for that update Bjorn. Sorry to see the flu situation has got people so paranoid up there.

From the local camera club:

It's on and off like a Yo-Yo but the latest news (now two hours old) seems to indicate that there may be not one, but two mass Khom Loy releases this year! Here's the info from our man nearest the spot....

8 pm:  the cousin contact just now got off the phone:  the meditation center will release the lanterns tomorrow night.  He is surprised since they said they were not going to do it.

However, he also said Mae Jo U will have a release next weekend.  Att talked to him and neglected to ask for details; will have her do so.
It's way too late to consider getting a minibus organised for tomorrow but if the rumour is true about the following weekend we will let you know and collect money from those who want to take part on Wednesday.
I suppose supressing all news about the event is one way of minimising the parking problem.
This information comes without any kind of warranty!  This.....is......Thailand.
