Well your reasoning is logical but it does not always work that way with the country of origin being less expensive then elsewhere. I just had to purchase two new hard drives and they were both 33% more than the price in the US; and they are made in Thailand.

Try doing a search for 'Thai Price Runner', Fotofile, and Capa at  Fortune town.that should give you a fair idea of the prices here.
Good luck.

bkkdave is correct about this. One would think the items would be cheaper where they are made as they do not have to be shipped a long distance around the world,  import duties will be levied and passed on to buyer, ... but that is not the case. Even all the camera gear that is still manufactured in Japan is a lot cheaper in USA than it is in Thailand, and last time I looked at a map Japan was a lot closer to Thailand than the USA. Makes no sense at all.

The cheapest offers on Nikon gear in Thailand is very often gray imports from Hong Kong, even if the gear is manufactured in Thailand, go figure...

The best price I've seen for a D80, body only, was THB 21,900, but it's getting harder finding those, since it hasn't been in production for quite a while now.

Hi Friends
Thanks for your replies, it is surprising that a Nikon product which is being manufactured in Thailand is not cheaper in Thailand and Nikon is cheaper in other countries.

I think the issue is that large companies that sell cameras and electronics like Nikon pretty much aim to keep their pricing more or less standard around the world. If they sold their equipment much cheaper in the country it was manufactured then they might hurt their sales in other countries. Just a thought.

Hi Mark
Instant reply from the administrator has been highly appreciated by me. U r correct, but before joining this forum i had a wrong idea that digital cameras r very cheap in Thailand, now it appears that this is not true.
Further  my another querry is that let me know if there is a reputed shopin Thailand dealing in used cameras and lenses with some warranty Huh?

Thanks

There are some good shops for 2nd hand equipment in Bangkok, but I assume there is no warranty or only a very short one, maybe 30 days from the shop.

At the moment, the best prices for cameras in Asia is probably HK. There was a discussion about it here before:

Good luck.

In all fairness to this pricing issue; the Thai prices include a 7% VAT which most of us are not eligible to recoup; whereas the USA price I am referring to is not subject to a tax because it is an internet purchase, although some purchases are taxable depending on where you live and where the company does business. Also often times the shipping is free in the US again depending on the circumstances.

Another thing that effects the Thai - USA price for me is the strength / weakness of the US Dollar vs the THB.

Just a thought...

I just sold a  Canon 24-70L 2.8 lens  in pristine condition to Capa in Fortune for 27,000 THB. They immediately put it in their window display for 38,000 THB; I think they would stand behind the lens if a reasonable problem occurred within a stated amount of time; however if you are living in India I just don't know how that would work out for you. There would be shipping charges at your expense and that alone could off set any advantage to a warranty. The lens was rarely used and kept in a dry cabinet; but the gentleman who checked it out for final inspection (there were three in all) really spent some time looking it over and putting it through his test system.

Dave - Did you try selling it here on the Forum first? Possibly you could have given someone a good price on the lens that way. Anyway, just a thought.

Yes Marc I did put it in the used equipment section in September 2007 but did not get any replies. I really liked that lens but since I am getting older I find that holding it steady is a problem so when I bought the 24-105L IS I found my photographs to be sharper. I do have two more L lenses that I rarely use so if I decide to sell them I will try the forum first.
Thanks

Thanks Dave. Glad to hear you at least tried to sell it on here first. I am happy when people can trade things for free through this site and it becomes a win/win for the people. Yes, the 24-105mm lens is easier to hold the focus on, I agree and of course has better focal length versatility. Only that vignetting is a problem with it at the wider F-Stops. Hopefully it hasn't been a problem for you though.

By the way, what are the other 2 lenses you are thinking of selling in the future? Just in case I might know someone who is interested.

Dave--you did pretty well selling it. You can compare to this site in USA. https://www.keh.com/onlinestore/home.aspx  BTW, over the years I have sold a lot of stuff thru them, they are very fair, and you usually would have a check in 2 or 3 days. Marc--I also listed assorted stuff on the site recently, and like Dave had no replies. Was a bit surprised, till I saw the other day I goofed with the conversion rate and stuff was higher prices than I was asking. I sold the 16-35mm, but except for the 15mm the other stuff is tentatively  "sold" to a friend--that is when he pays me for it all. :-)
