There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

i thought these pictures might stimulate a broader range of posts   it is not typical of my normal work but is more a long time obsession i have -----creating a Francis Bacon like image with a camera ----all the hard work was done using conventional film in camera PS was used  to tidy things up

Very interesting Alan, thank you for sharing. Was this something you shot here in Thailand? Also, might you share with us a bit more background on how this image was created using the camera and what message you are wanting to portray?

hi marc  i finished these pictures 2 davs ago  hence the desire to post them    the pictures were done purely for my own pleasure [just to see if i could do it]  so the only message i,m trying to convey is that the camera is a magic tool and can be used in many many different ways    also that photography is not necesserily an act that requires you follow a set list of rules    technical  [how did you do it?] question s generally dont interest me much  -- however as these pictures almost demand explanation -- here goes---[simplified version]    i built my own version of a motor drive [very very slow] i then masked off the space between the lens and the film so that the information hitting the film as it slowly moved across was minimal    by choreographing the model and changing the lighting setup 3 or 4 times within a period of 5 or 6 seconds i was able to capture the range of focus- blur- and movement similar to a bacon painting

Thank you for the explanation. Very interesting technique and subject matter. Unique as well. If you had a series of 20-30 of these you could probably do an exhibition. I can refer you to someone in Bangkok who might be interested to give you an exhibition if you are interested to do one. Anyway, keep up the great work!

morning marc   thankyou for the offer  i think that a photographic show of Francis Bacon photographs would probably attract some attention but i  dont feel like doing it  [at the moment anyway]     i am presently working on an exhibition  of beauty pictures [it,s half printed already]  however despite being a full time resident of thailand  doing all my post production in bangkok and printing it at IQ lab i cannot let any forum members see any images as much of the source material was shot elswhere  Huh?   ===== to be continued in Guest Book

When I first saw these images I thought they were paintings.  Looking at them now they still look like paintings.  I can definately see the resemblance to Bacon's work, although the pallete on your image looks to be much warmer.

The single piece affects me more than the triptych.  I feel that the models expression, although distorted, seems to be more jovial in nature in the other two images, which seems out of step with the colors.  Similarily, the model appears to be slamming one hand down and making a fist with the other, which to me, fits with the aggresive, almost violent color scheme.  Lastly, the composition of the single image is very dynamic while the other two seem to be more centered and stable.  In my mind, the dynamic composition fits with the aggresive theme that I see in the image.  In other words, I feel that the in the single image more elements are consistent and thus it makes for a stronger image overall.

thankyou for the criticism john  i agree that one image is perhaps working more dynamically than the others      in my defense i would argue that in a bacon triptich that tends to be the case  namely that not all the images have the same power but are creating a balance usually asymetrical    as to some of the details  like hands face etc you mentioned      that unfortunately is down to the total unpredictability of the technique i'm using   there is a certain amount of luck involved in all photography  perhaps even more so with this system    thankyou again for your interest and comments
