I am a photographer from San Diego and looking to make my first trip to Thailand later this summer or fall. Any suggestions on photographing remote areas of Thailand. Will have 2 weeks approx, travel alone so I can go fast.  Would like to take in as much as I could. Mainly looking for people and culture. And landscapes along the way.

Sorry, I don't have any advice or answers to your question, but just giving a shout out to San Diego!  I'm from SD also and am going on a quick 8 day trip to Thailand, May 22nd-31st!  This will be my first time, I'm really excited to bring back a few (hopefully more than a few) great shots.  We will probably spend some time in BKK, Chiang Mai, and possibly Phra Nang and Krabi areas as well.  Unfortunately, with airfare being so expensive I doubt I'll have much money for new lenses....so I think I'm just sticking with my canon 40d and 17-55 f/2.8 is.  Should be pretty good for street photography, but I'll miss out on any telephoto ops.  Oh well, make due with what ya got, right?

sabruzzo - I'd recommend heading to Mae Hong Son which is in the far north west of Thailand, hugging the border with Burma. There's plenty of information on the net if you have a look around. We stayed here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g297928-d450899-Reviews-Fern_Resort-Mae_Hong_Son.html  but I'd probably look elsewhere next time.

DeMartini - IMHO you're trying to do too much in 8 days. I'm a big fan of the north, but if I only had 8 days in Thailand I'd spent half in Bangkok, then fly down to Krabi. Bangkok is a huge city (approx 3 - 4 times the size of SD I think), so it's easy to see that you could spend the whole 8 days there if you wanted to.

mahonyWeb - Yeah, I can imagine it wouldn't be much of a vacation if I spent half the time just traveling in country...  I think that's a solid suggestion, and probably what we will end up doing.  The way I usually travel is by just buying the flight, then go wherever you feel like once you're in country.  We may get there and shoot right to the beach and never leave a hammock, although I'm in it much more for the cultural experience, rather than doing the same thing I do at home in San Diego!  Thanks again, and happy travels everyone!

All that in 8 days, Did you manage it or did the hammock win?  Would have spent half of it myself in BKK the same, Great for photos, I especially enjoyed visiting the many parks around the city. I will be there again in November / December ( escaping the cold here in the UK ) and hopefully will be going north. I've been as far as Loei but would like to go further this time.  I travel the same way, fly to Bangkok and then decide. Hope you had a great time anyway.

Parks in the city? Hmm... that's new to me. I enjoy shooting in the markets, like flower market, chatuchak, etc. Lots of photo opportunity and great buys. :-)
