There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Aparently the Thai press reported today that the Nikon camera factory in Ayutthaya, which produces many of the Nikon DSLR cameras, laid off 700 of its factory workers today.

I recall hearing they have a workforce of 15,000 at that plant.

Do they have a factory tour I wonder? That would be fascinating.

I would tend to doubt they would have a factory tour, but I agree, it would certainly be interesting. Technology secrets issue though I would think.

I didn't realize there were that many people working there. I heard another figure though that there was more like 2,000 layoffs on Friday. Either way, a sad story for the Thai people working in that factory and an indication of a decline of the camera industry in general.

A sightseeing would be interesting, but probably not possible, not only due to the fact that they are probably manufacturing models that are not yet releasedm but also because of all the hassle due to cleanliness and a dust-free environment.

Pity with the lay-offs, but with the current economic trends, and a market that starts to get saturated, it's no surprise. Those who manufacture in Japan and China are probably going through the same process. We just don't hear about it here in Thailand.
