Many of you might have seen this already, but Canon just announced a new 5D model:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0809/08091705canon_5dmarkII.asp

Seems like a good value for money, considering the price of it and the fact that they have broken above the 16MP mark now by jumping right to 21MP on this semiprofessional body.

Looks good. I'm tempted to buy one for use with all my OM Zuikos.

Thanks, Mark.  I'm attending a Canon workshop in Catalina (California) on Sept. 27 and one session is on 5D; I wonder if this is it.  I will post in Forum how it goes.

Hi Mark,
Ye Its an impressive upgrade, if Nikon don't reply soon I am tempted to jump ship and go to Canon.
Do Canon Thailand supply direct to consumers, like Nikon / Niks Thailand.
If not who are the main dealers for Canon in Thailand.
Thanks Adzz

I wouldn't jump ship just yet. I am sure Nikon will be around the corner with something.

For Canon the main dealers are in MBK - Foto File and Foto Thailand - same company actually and no, Canon Thailand does not sell anything direct as far as I know.

Good luck...

Yeah I think there is no doubt that Nikon will have something in the pipe line soon.

Would be a big decision to jump ship these days with the constant swing from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Nikon really upped there game with the D300 and the D3 and now the D700 and it was only a matter of time that Cannon woud respond.  They have with what looks like being a great upgrade on the old 5D.  Many didn't expect Nikon to announce the arrival of the D700 so soon after the release of the D3, but obviously the market pressure is now such that each feels compelled to continue to try and maintain or gain the market dominance so chasing the newest and best product will be a never ending battle.

Cannon have a huge megapixel camera now at a reasonable price in full frame and you would expect Nikon will follow suit shortly.

The question is how far will they go.

On the back of the 700, I find the most interesting thing is that in terms of theoretical pic quality, both N's and C's best output is "currently" available in a mid sized camera. Is this just timing and coincidence or have the four thirds group got a start on the market? Does the future (as I believe epixx has been telling us for a while) mean smaller more usable cameras Huh

oh, I now realize, I so hope!

[food for thought]

Just got back from the Canon Capture Catalina workshop.  A Canon guy showed us (on big screen) the video clip of Vincent Laforet and the story behind it.  Mind blowing.  He mentioned new 5D coming out late November.... around $2,700.00.  Unfortunately, his workshop was on the old 5D and admitted he could not answer the new 5D questions as he isn't familiar with it as yet.

I'd snap it in a second, at this price, but I am finally going back to Thailand (yoohoo!), after a one years lapsus. It will come out in the US a few weeks after I am here (just before Loy Kratong). And no one to bring it afterwards. I safely assume there is no way it will be that"cheap" in BKK, of course.

Mark, any chance of a studio lighting WS this next winter?

Never say never. Prices have decreased here lately compared to the US. D700 is THB 96,000 (USD 2,800) at reputable shops and just 84,000 (USD 2,450) at Capa, which is reputable enough, but grey import.

I called Canon Thailand to find out when they thought 5D II will arrive in Thailand.
The feedback I got was that is would be here around December and be not more than 100 thousand Bt..

Now I am wondering  if they will launch a compact medium format solution along with Nikon's rumored MX system and Leica....?
