Does anyone here with a Gitzo 2 or 3 series tripod and Markins ballhead combination use the Markins base?  Supposedly, it dampens vibration.  I just wonder if it really does what it claims and if it's necessary to get one.  I don't recall seeing an equivalent vibration dampening component from it's competitor, RRS.   Anyone have experience with this?  Thanks.

This is not really answering your question as I dont use a Gitzo but I do use a Markins 20 with a Velbon C. The equivalent with my setup, to using the markins base, would be centre column down (which gives direct contact with the head and tripod base on a Velbon) and centre column up (which is the equivalent of the Markins sans base on a Gitzo with a centre column).

For my usage (which is pretty general landscapes and such) I have seen no difference in column up or column down in terms of vibration affecting my pics.
