i have a chance to give my wife the G7, and buy a G9 for this trip- but i lose 500 smacks of spending money. i will also carry my d2x. after reading about people being shy around big cameras (and my love for the G size) i wondering should i do it-

please advise,

I suppose that if losing 500 smacks is not an issue then it really does not matter; however if 500 smacks is significant in your budget for your trip then weighing the advantages of the G9 over the G7 should help you determine which course to choose and if it is worth it to you, because this is really a personal choice and not something anyone can give an opinion on.

What are your reasons for the upgrade? Will you be able to capture better images with the G9 vs G7?
