There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

“In My Mother’s Footsteps” is an introspective project that I created during my Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, based on the memoirs my mother wrote in the later years of her life. Using her notes and a large-format camera with colour film, I retraced my mother’s early life during World War II and the Holocaust. This included her escape from Berlin, Germany to Groningen in Holland, and then her capture by the Nazis and experiences that followed in concentration camps. I followed in My mother’s footsteps, saw the places where she had been and chronicled the mundane details of her existence during the Holocaust
In all, I travelled through four countries, visited five different concentration camps, and followed the path of the “Death March” of winter 1944.
