There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Canon 17-85 IS USM or Sigma 18 -200

Hi - I've been reading reviews at Fredmiranda. I'm planning to do a long of travel photography and the Sigma 18 -200M OS appeals to me because its a all-in-one lens. However, it seems that IQ suffers.
I've also read reviews that state that the Canon 17-85IS USM is poor as well, and that it might be better to skip that and go with the Sigma.
I'm buying my Canon 40D this weekend, and I'm wondering if I should just go with the 40D body with the Sigma or make do with the 40D + 17 - 85IS until I have more moolah for a better zoom lens.
Would appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks!

You might look at the Tamron 17-50. It gets excellent reviews on FM and other places. On the 40D it's like a normal 24-80 which is a good range for many things in travel. It is quite inexpensive despite it's good optics probably because it lacks the image stabilization.

Thanks Chris.
Will check on the reviews. Its fun getting all the gear the first time / upgrading from a bridge cam.
