Buy refurb Apple in the states or education store if you're a student or teacher.  Much better prices than full retail and same warranty.

well the consensus seems to be either a mac15" or a pc.  cannot bring myself to spend the $$ needed for the mac.  a friend suggested a dell.  reading a couple of reviews i see that it's kinda on the heavy side (about 6lbs) and weight is a concern to me.  have yet to compare that to other laptops.
thanks again

The thing with Apples is if you buy one in the states and use for a year or so you can usually sell it for what you bought it for in Thailand.  That's what I've done for three years.  I get a new machine every year and have never paid a dime more.  They hold resale value well and they also are way overpriced in Thailand...two really good things :)

So you can get a refurb macbook for less than 1K or a book pro for around 1300 or so.  Really good longer term investment.  My G4 powerbook I sold to my English friend is still running 4 or 5 years later with no problems at all.  Solid little computer.  Also they have service centers all over the world.  Check to make sure the Dell service center here will work on US Dells.  I know for a fact the Apple ones do.  Worldwide warranty is a nice thing if you travel...and you get it for free.
