left in closet all day in room, no ac but not too hot.
ipod does not come on at all.  wolverine vibrates and green light comes on but nothing appears in window.

have enoogh memory cards to complete trip.  will have to switch fromn raw to jpeg.

I wonder if a power surge could have caused it. There is a apple repair center in Siam Discovery that might be able to check the Ipod if you will be here long enough. The good thing is that memory cards are cheap now if you need to purchase more. Another alternative is to go to a photo shop and have cd’s burned from your cards.

Good idea on the CDs Dave, but they can fail too. Better to have two copies burned of each card using two different brands of high quality media before clearing the cards out. Say Sony and TDK or Verbatim. Often those shops only have the cheap Princo media on hand so better to buy your own first and then ask them to burn using your own media. Probably most likely will need to go onto DVD though and not CD. Good information here about disk quality, a link once provided in a thread on the Forum by Chris Savery:

Agree on the CD/DVD. Always burn two, and always buy your own media.

Regarding the failing units: they may have failed due to too high, but also too low voltage. Both can damage the electronics as well as the batteries. For critical travel backup in any part of the world where the electric supply is unreliable, I would choose a drive that accepts AA's, which are charged outside the unit in a separate charger.

The Hyperdrive  http://www.hypershop.com/shop/index.php  runs on different energy sources, an external pack that takes 4 AA's being one of them. It's also very fast for transfers. They used to be available in Singapore, but I haven't been there in ages, and I haven't seen them here in Thailand.

update- at the end of one whole day of both drives not working, they are now working.
i charged them separately, the wolverine for a couple of hours and the ipod overnight.  they charged fine.

the problem may have been having them in the same socket.

good to know about the apple store. thanks.

I've had a lot of weird power things like that over here.  My transformer will frequently just stop working for a day or two...same with a few other things...thankfully not hard drives though.  I would immediately get stuff off of them though as it could be the first signs of a failing drive...could have just been a weird Thailand thing but you can't be too cautious.
