There are some photographers who are just pressing a button. And then there are the others who see the world in a very different way...

Hi all,

I'm a US based photographer coming to SE Asia for a month and am really looking forward to the experience.  I will be in Thailand for only a short part of the trip, and am looking for some suggestions on locations and local assistance.

November 18-22nd and 29th to 1st I'll be in Thailand.

I would love some suggestions for how to maximize my photography time and capture the beauty and history of the country.  I am thinking that Chiang Mai would be a good base for the first part, and deal with Bangkok on the 2nd part.  I normally try to work with a local guide, so thought I'd see if anyone on here has some suggestions.

I will be in Burma and Cambodia for the rest of the trip, so if there are any "must see" items there, please feel free to advise.

Thanks in advance.

-Michael

P.S. Does anyone happen to have any local language releases?

There are interesting subjects to photograph all over the country. It depends on what it is you are interested in. If you want historical scenes try Sukhothai. Beautiful historical park there with lots of beautiful Buddha statues and old temples. A great place for silhouettes at sunset and sunrise as well.

If you want nice shots of the beaches and islands, Krabi is a great place to base yourself. Lots of small islands off the coast to photograph around there and you can take day trips on boats from there out to many of the islands.

Chiang Mai has little natural beauty anymore. Lots of temples though if you want that. Mae Hong Son is a nice area too and still quite rural further north.

Sanklaburi is a great spot too along the Burmese border. There is a nice long wooden bridge there and some traditional looking villages along the reservoir. You can get some nice shots there early morning of life along the waterways. People washing, fishing, etc.

Just to add to Marc's post. I agree, Sanklaburi is a fantastic little place to take photos. Also, on the way to Sanklaburi from Kaanchanaburi, there is a big lake (reservoir) with beautiful sunset views. The wooden bridge is great also, with some nice scenery on either side of it.

I would also add the often overlooked Nan province, in the North. It had some forest fires the last time we were there, but it's beautiful nevertheless.
